The workshop

Summary and Objectives
Dec 9, 2025
full day

Complex socio-technical systems are increasingly becoming a cornerstone of our societies in many aspects, from production, communication, transportation to politics and economics. A defining feature of these systems lies in their intertwined layers of technology, human behavior, and infrastructure networks, as well as the emergent challenges of integrating autonomous decision-making agents ---whether human collectives or AI-driven entities like large language model (LLM) agents. The pervasive presence and importance of such systems calls for novel paradigms that bridge socio-inspired insights and socially aware control strategies to address their inherent complexity.

Motivated by these challenges, we propose a workshop with the primary objective of creating a platform for researchers to discuss innovative ideas at the intersection of collective intelligence, socio-technical dynamics, and control of complex systems.

This workshop will offer a diverse yet consistent and thorough overview of the ongoing efforts towards hacking complex socio-technical systems from a socio-inspired and socially aware perspective, showcasing how systems- and control-theoretic approaches offer powerful tools to advance this field, while bringing innovation from evolutionary game theory, network science, and experimental psychology.

The Conference

Key goals

  1.  Grasp complex socio-technical systems: Understand the key elements of complex socio-technical systems, focusing on their impact on daily life and the integration of technology, human behavior, and infrastructure.

  2. Decode socio-inspired mechanisms: How collective behaviors in human teams or LLM agent societies can inspire novel control paradigms, focusing on emergent intelligence, self-organization, and scalable coordination in heterogeneous multi-agent systems.

  3. Advance socially-aware control frameworks: Strategies that improve interactions between humans and machines, regulate systems with heterogeneous goal-driven agents, and move beyond efficiency-centric metrics to incorporate multidimensional outcomes, such as fairness, security, and inclusivity, into the design of socio-technical systems.

  4. Establish a discussion platform: Open discussion on current and future challenges in socio-technical systems, laying the foundations for a stable discussion platform on complex socio-technical systems within our research community.
